Community Spotlight: Free Art Friday

Community SpotlightI first met Stephanie Galloway, Artist, Musician, Poet and Educator as a volunteer in the Children’s Zone of the Rail Yards Market during the days when Community Publishing was programming the kids activities there. It struck me how giving Stephanie was (is) and how eager she was to give and or/impart to children the gift of art. Over the past year I discovered many more things about Stephanie including the fact that she is the Albuquerque Administrator of the global movement called Free Art Friday (FAF)!

It Is What It Is

According to Stephanie the “English artist by the name “My Dog Sighs,” coined the phrase Free Art Friday, (2006) which has spread around the world. People got inspired by what he was doing and started chapters internationally.”

Furthermore Stephanie states, “Albuquerque has an amazing artist’s scene with a lot to offer, and I wanted to share their talents with the world.”

Breaking the Rules on the Ground

Free Art Friday In a nutshell, Artwork is placed on the streets of Albuquerque for any member of the public to enjoy and take home! Post only pictures of free art please. According to Stephanie, “the mission of FAF Albuquerque is not only to promote the artists of Albuquerque but to be able to share and put out some of the best pieces from our friends around the globe.” Feel free to post pictures of your art on the FAF Facebook Page. There are no rules, thats the joy! In order to keep a record of exclusively free art you need to make sure the work is easily removable and does little or no damage to it’s environment.” Get out there on Friday’s and find some art! Life in the Fader: Xian Bass

The Grand Fantastic Life of DJ Flo Fader multimedia book project has brought together so many talented individuals beginning with DJ Flo Fader himself (Roscoe Floyd), and including Photographer Alex Lopez and myself Author, Alex Paramo. Along with internationally known talents like Master Ace, and J-Live, there will be some super talented local folks as well.

Today we feature one of those talented contributors, singer/songwriter Xian Bass. Xian is  from San Francisco, CA. She moved to Albuquerque from Atlanta, GA. Xian’s latest video, Good Morning Love, was produced by DJ Flo Fader. The song and video touch upon many topics such as; sensuality, being in the present moment, and enjoying the peace of the morning to start your day off with positive energy.

Youth Outreach

“In my career providing youth outreach and extra-curricular education, I have been inspired by the many teenagers I have created bonds with. Over and over again, I see the same root of many different issues our teens face. One of the most reoccurring issues is sex; effective sexual education and knowledge of health is lacking. I want to bring realistic concepts that youth can relate to so they can make healthier decisions about their sexuality. I strive to create change in our society. I want to help people see spirituality within sexuality. I believe that when we view sex as one with spirit, we will treat it differently.” – Xian Bass

Xian is currently studying social work and education with the intent of becoming a high school social worker and principal. She offers these words of advice, “Surround yourself with people that mirror your best self. Do activities with your friends in the community. As adults, I feel that we begin to forget how to have REAL fun. It gets boring to just go out and drink at a bar all the time. Try the museum, park, or the zoo. Learning new things together is a way to strengthen the bond with people you love.” Read More about Xian.

Back to Nature: Explorers at Explora

Explorers at ExploraDid you know you can find “The Glassman’s” self watering containers on display at the Explora Science Center and Children’s Museum in Albuquerque, New Mexico?

They have been on display since Sept 2014. On a trip to Explora my daughter one day, I found himself inside the Arts and Crafts rooms and found all the items needed to make some wicking containers.

All you do is add soil and seeds to so they can be self watered. After creating them I asked the crew there if they had some soil and seeds (which they did) and water was added to the lower part of the bottle. Seeds were actually sown right there in Explora by the Glassman! Go check it out, 2 of the 3 original bottles remain. We are planning a day when “The Glassman” will host a workshop there for kids and their families!

The Glassman

Community Spotlight: Alternative Media

People often comment to me that they notice my work with Community Publishing. I take that as positive commentary since the point of Community Publishing is to get people noticed. Community Publishing is much more than multimedia books (they are quite important), Digital Marketing (Indigenous Grafix) or Blogs but rather the creation of a media platform that will eventually become open access and free to use. Why would I embark on a project of such magnitude?

Taking Back Democracy

media-infographic-1“If the public forum is not fully open, then those who control access become gatekeepers. If they charge money in return for access, then those with money have a greater ability to participate. Good ideas in the minds of men and women who cannot afford the price of admission to the public forum are then no longer available for consideration. The conversation of democracy then comes untethered from the rule of reason and can (is) being manipulated.”

The field of Media Studies provides countless examples of how the “main stream” media has fallen into the control of the hands of a few. Those countless few control what we view, hear, experience and ultimately shape how we perceive the world. These few are corporations controlled by the extremely wealthy.

This is one slide of a great infographic used in an Business Insider article. While this information is common knowledge the gravity of the situation seems lost on us.

Alternative Media

Alternative Media provides an outlet for regular folks like you and I to gain access to media from folks that have different viewpoints from folks from the ultra-wealthy corporate heads that currently control the majority of the media. Furthermore it allows for a diverse group of people to voice their views and concerns. It is crucial that we have as many viewpoints to generate more ideas and allow for greater creativity in our society.

Video Blog (Vlog)

Community SpotlightWith the idea of diversity of thought in mind, Community Publishing‘s Community Spotlight series strides towards promoting locally based artists of all mediums that are serving the interests of their community. The Community Spotlight Video Blog (Vlog) brings these artists and their ideas to audiences using video. Video is arguably the most effective type of media to engage audiences with. Here is our first installment utilizing the resources of our partner  High Def Entertainment  | Affinity Music Group.

Community Spotlight: Harrison Begay Jr. Artist

Artist Harrison Begay Jr.

Today’s Community Spotlight focusing on fine Native American Pottery Artist Harrison Begay Jr. Mr. Harrison Begay Jr. is Diné (Navajo) artist, from the small Navajo Reservation town of Jeddito, He specializes in the Santa Clara style of pottery which he began mastering in the early 1990’s.

Awards and Success

Community SpotlightThroughout the 1990s and 2000s, Harrison was able to see much success by participating prestigious art shows like the world-famous Santa Fe Indian Market (Santa Fe, New Mexico) and Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market (Phoenix, Arizona), all while collecting numerous awards for his work.

Harrison draws not only from his Diné heritage and various local indigenous cultures to create the foundation of his style, but also draws from other Indigenous cultures of the world like the Maori People. While residing in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Harrison is able to surround himself by a plethora of artistic culture and maintains a network of galleries and private collectors who carry his award-winning artwork.

Legacy

Mr. Begay strongly believes in Diné traditions and culture. The passing on of these cultural lessons is of the utmost importance to Mr. Begay. Therefore, he ensured the legacy of his art
At_Work by teaching his son, Daniel, how to create such art. Already an individual possessing creative and artistic ability, Harrison was able to work with Daniel to refine his skill in building, designing and deep carving. The angled, deep-carving has become a recognizable characteristic of Harrison’s work. Harrison and Daniel have also collaborated on numerous pieces as well, and continue to do so.the teachings of his In his spare time, Harrison enjoys spending time with his son Daniel, daughter Jamie, and granddaughter Violet.

Community Publishing celebrates Mr. Begay and his achievements as an artist, teacher, father, and grandfather. Mr. Begay is truly an example of a community leader and we are honored to shine the spotlight on him!
