Weirdly’s World: Dead Trees

I’ve been talking a lot about objects being infused with our presence to the point were they feel like they have taken on a life of their own. This next page again shows a more heightened version of that reality. Prominently displayed are a billboard a trademark mascot “Buiding Head” and a dead tree. Which I have been toying with turning into
it’s own comic book series called “The Adventures of Dead Tree.” Creatively this is how these things go, you invest into a creature or character and they start to kind of talk back to you. Dead Tree told me it wanted it’s own story, not in so many words but after I drew it a seed of a story popped into my head.

Visually I became invested with Dead Tree. Why not the 3rd Eye Coffee billboard or The Building Head guy? I’m not sure, I wish I knew. Dead Tree just spoke louder. As soon as I finished inking it in I plotted out a few pages, weather or not I do anything more with Dead Tree depends on if it keeps talking to me I suppose. It’s interesting how these thing say “I want life.”

What we make. Just look at the size of it. MASSIVE! Is it overwhelming? Entirely helpful or entirely unhelpful?
Who’s in control? Us or what we make? Or is it a symbiotic relationship ? Theses are the questions we face as well as the cyclops scientist in the story.

The Deep End

I feel like the things we make as a collective are like living beings. Our thoughts, hopes, fears, loves, and joys surround them on a daily basis. Infusing them with life and presence. The Awakener is this. Made and infused with the blood, sweat and tears or the cyclops scientist. With the reality of Artificial Intelligence (AI) drones and robots becoming more and more present within our society we face the advent of intelligent interactions with what we make. I think in the long term we do not control the things we fabricate. We produce it and away it goes. As others add on to it and make it grow it takes on a life of it’s own. In the end the things we make are much like us.

The next page is really an impression from the 60’s tv show The Outer Limts. The show featured men in suits with bizarre heads frequently. As a kid it struck me as odd and disturbing and stuck with me through my adult life. The weird head in a business suit is a theme running through our culture now. The suits have power over us they run things and have an untouchable quality to them. They are villains or monsters in our current social stage. SLENDER MAN is a good example of this monster in a suit metaphor. The guys in the comic  …are they monsters or misguided or neither ? I leave that up to you.

Dave Weirdly

Dave Weirdly is from Chicago, Illinois. He started drawing
at a very early age, like most of us. He is the Founder, and Creator of Weirdly’s Comics.

Unlike most of us he never stopped. He had a passion for making up characters and putting them in odd situations. Creating Comics seemed to fit his interests.

Dave’s Words

“In my early adult life comics didn’t fit. I lacked the patience to do a long sequential story. So I moved on to other artistic endeavors.”

Dave did some commercial work in Ohio with the highlight being a toy series called Squat Bots. Chicago, was where Dave was exposed to the fine arts. He made wood constructions for sale through galleries and his personal studio. According to Dave, “they kind of looked like weird puppet shows or shooting galleries, or both.

The Chaos Window

Dave fell back to comics when his constructions became even more narrative. Dave found drawing comics put him in a zen like state. Dave states that, “I now had the patience I lacked before.”
