5 Reasons to Celebrate Youth Day at the Rail Yards Market by Alex Paramo

The great playwright George Bernard Shaw once said, “Youth is wasted on the young.” While our reflex response is to agree with Shaw, I seriously believe that as a society, we can change that. How? By creating safe-spaces where our young folks can express themselves, unlock their creative souls, and promote the ideas that are relevant to their generation. Our multidimensional world requires multi-sensory ideas and solutions and that is what the arts cultivate in all of us. In these days of constant information, our young folks are generating not only new ideas, but new paradigms! Their collective potential to change our unsustainable ways of living is something we must invest in.

Join us in celebration of our Empowered Youth

Young folks are adept at multiple modes of expression: visual, musical, kinesthetic. They have the potential to change thYouth Day Warehouse 508e world, and we have a responsibility to give them the tools with which to accomplish it! In that vein, we are very excited and honored to have Warehouse 508 be our guest programmer for our Youth Day theme! “Warehouse 508 is Albuquerque’s biggest youth art and entertainment center located in downtown Albuquerque. We offer a safe, structured and supervised facility to young adults and youth. Warehouse 508 provides a variety of programming and events that are youth driven, and youth focused.”

1.  The Pop-up Gallery will feature poster art from the Warehouse 508 Screenprinting program, sketches from the Fashion Department, and skateboards painted by local and national artists for the 5th Annual NMX Xtreme Art Auction, scheduled for August 1st. Proceeds from the auction provide scholarships for young people to participate in arts and extreme sports programming. Representatives from Warehouse 508 will be on-hand through-out the day.

Youth Day2.  Live Art Zone – Warehouse 508 Mural Arts instructors Roberto Reyes, Kailani, Jermz, and their students will be painting on recycled skateboards to prepare for the NMX Xtreme Art Auction scheduled for August 1st. Proceeds from the auction provide scholarships for young people to participate in urban art and extreme sports programming.

3.  Local painter Gem the Alien will host a sticker making workshop in the Youth Art Zone to promote his program Xpression Sessions, free studio art classes hosted by local emerging artists held twice monthly (2nd and 4th Fridays) at Warehouse 508.

4.  The Community Stage will feature performances by the Warehouse 508 Rockstar and DJ programs as well as demos from 508 Break dancers, UHF Youth Crew, and a free breakdance workshop at 11:30am hosted by Bboy Versatility of Versatile Styles dance studio. Afternoon performances by youth singer songwriters. See schedule. Sage McKay is an Amy Biehl High School senior and composer who recently released his EP recorded in the Warehouse 508 studios.

5.  Warehouse 508 Photography students will document the day for us. I’ve included a flier we created for this weekend, a few photos of screen printed posters, a photo of a skateboard painted by muralist Aaron Noble who painted the Quantum Bridge Mural with our youth last fall.

Vision Thing

As we celebrate Youth Day, lets remember that we should honor and respect the next generation of leaders on a daily basis. We can lead them by being true leaders and conducting ourselves in the manner we would like to see them conduct themselves. If we work together, we can create the safe and free spaces that youth will need to set our society upon a different course that values justice, equality and respect for all living organisms that share our planet Earth.

The World Cup just wrapped up and the probabiliuty that half the world was watching at one point or another is very impressive indeed. But what does that say about our world? Outside the U.S. and just about everywhere in the world Soccer, Futbol, Football is King. In some most countries no other sport even comes close.

Barash, examines the possibility that our natural wiring for group participation is manipulated by sports and sports marketers. Additionally, Barash posits, the same vulnerabilities that are exploited for a sense of national identity are one and the same.

Stop for a moment and think about the things you do and encounter in everyday life? Where did our habits, customs and collective knowledge come from? Whether we’re conscious of it or not, our heritage guides us. The choices of our ancestors, their lives and their beliefs, are worthy of understanding because they continue to inform our lives and our world even today. As we’re collectively re-discovering the value of all of the ancient wisdom that was written off as antiquated, out-dated, etc., we now see how vital this wisdom is and the prominent role it needs to play in our society today.

The Henna Fairy

HeritagePooja Lopriore aka the Henna Fairy is a great example of how wisdom from the past can lead and instruct us today. Pooja is of Indian descent and learned the Art of Henna from her family. According to Pooja, “Henna is very vast subject that has been used in Science, Art, Spirituality and traditions around the links throughout the world. Its recorded use has been 5000 years and most of it has been medicinal. It is new to the west and thus most popularly known as body adornment and temporary tattoos.”

Southwest University of Visual Arts

The Visual Arts have always been used as a means to SUVAcommunicate and pass down from one generation to the next elements of heritage and communal knowledge. To that overall end the Southwest University of Visual Arts (SUVA) is one of the Rail Yards Market‘s (RYM) sponsors and will be programming many of the Educational Zones! From SUVA’s mission statement, “Southwest University of Visual Arts strives to become an exemplary force in higher education recognized as a leading University of Art and Design.”

At the Children’s Zone, Chris Andrews and Lisa Ealy will be representing SUVA. Chris SUVA HeritageAndrews is part of the core faculty at SUVA. He studied Photography at NMSU in Las Cruces where he received his BA. Lisa Ealy is finishing out her freshman year as a student at SUVA, she is seeking a BA in illustration. Chris and Lisa are planning a variety of activities to fill the day. They will be reading some traditional fairy tales and scary stories, and I know they also plan to have some more hands-on activities as well such as mask making.”

The Pop-up Art Gallery will be featuring several examples of sculpture from of our current students and graduates.

3D Art Heritage DayRYM Live Arts Zone presents two of our very own hard working grassroots local artists! Sarah Rose and Desiree Danielle Clugston will be working side by side all Market Day respectively sharing their gifts in the Ancient Arts of Mask Creation and Crafting along with the unique modern day innovations of  3Dimensional Canvas Paintings. In Celebration of Heritage Day come see the past become the present and the present reach out into our future!

On the Main and Community Stages the RYM will have many acts that contribute to our collective heritage including but not limited to Wamba Dance, Ramla Taal Belly Dancers, Poets Teresa Gallion and Georgia Santa Maria, Musicians Rev Tsolwar and Wilde Wood. Heritage is bi-directional, therefore what we do today individually and collectively becomes the heritage for future generations. As you enjoy the market today, take time to talk with your family and others you meet about what your/our heritage means to you. Each time this year, as parades and fireworks fill our 4th of July celebrations, we celebrate
America’s birth as a nation. However, the Rail Yards Market (RYM) would like our community to consider celebrating this holiday by considering our Inter-dependence on each other and appreciate the holistic nature of our community, society and world.

Interdependence

One Market, One Community, One World, One Love

Lets think of how we treat other, how we treat the earth and natural resources, how nations interact with one another with the the realization that we are all connected. Think of how we can celebrate our freedom as a nation through working to improve our communities, our state, and other parts of the world, knowing that if they suffer, we suffer as well. Let’s celebrate knowing that we can all prosper together as a global community, a society and an interconnected community here in Albuquerque at the Rail Yards Market.

Using predominantly recycled materials such as Tile, Stone, Steel, Trash, And reclaimed wood, I attempt to create work that shows alternative perspectives To Social, Political, and Environmental issues. The other side of my creative process is just simply making an effort to create Art out of materials others have discarded. Often the found object Suggests the finished piece.”

The Children’s Zone is bringing in Keith Sanchez, internationally recognized singer-songwriter, who will be giving free lessons to the kiddos! Bring your own guitar and meet Keith at the Community Stage at 10!! Keith is the founder and lead instructor at the New Mexico Academy of Rock & Blues. From the Left Field Bleachers – The World Cup: the Final Frontier

As the U.S. born son of two Colombian immigrants I have certain benefits come World Cup time, I get to root for two teams: “The Yanks” and “Los Cafeteros.” The issue of immigration is crucial to any sports conversation because, as in Major League Baseball and especially in the National Basketball Association we have seen the influx of many players from other Colombian-American World Cupcountries. In these sports a player can play for any team regardless of where he was born or even where he resides. In the Olympics, all notions of amateur have been thrown out the window. The Olympics are now accepted as a show-case for pro athletes while filling the coffers of the International Olympic Committee and serving as publicity for pro leagues.

U.S. Men’s Soccer

The U.S. displayed remarkable resiliency at the World Cup. They were immediately cast as underdogs when placed in the group of death and given a daunting traveling schedule. I rooted for them loud and proud! Despite their success and my affinity for the team, I am a bit troubled by Landon Donovan‘s exclusion from the team and the bigger question it brings up: should players with little if any connections to the U.S. be permitted to play on the National team? Should a player like John Brooks, who has never even lived in the U.S. be chosen over say a Landon Donovan, still one of the best U.S. players, who has committed his life to the U.S. program?

Flag Waving

Darryl_StrawberryAs a kid I would would follow the NY Mets, NY Jets and NY Knicks not only because I am a born and raised NYer but because for the most part the ‘core’ of the team would stay in-tact from season to season. That consistency on the roster(s) allowed me to identify them and with them in the context of wins and losses. I felt like I could feel their suffering doing a bad season and partake in the celebration(s) with them during team triumphs. Heck, in my mind, I was part of the team! Of course these days yesterdays villain (Boston Red Sox Roger Clemens) becomes today’s hero (New York Yankees Roger Clemens). Which leads us back to Landon Donovan and the German Invasion.

Xenophobia

Final_FrontierNow of course my sentiments are not born out of Xenophobia because, as I stated above, my parents are immigrants to this great country. The idea of the U.S. as a country that welcomes people from all corners of the world is paramount to my identity as an American. Many Native North Americans welcomed the first European settlers and helped them get, well, settled and I still believe in that welcoming spirit. My sentiments regarding the U.S. Soccer program coach Jürgen Klinsmann‘s decision of taking 5 German nationals over Landon Donovan and other home-grown players stem from my desire to identify with my national team. I respect Klinsman as a coach but disagree with his decision.

The Final Frontier

The World Cup represents the final frontier, the last bastion of true ‘fandom’ where we root for our team based upon a shared national experience. Of course there is a commercial aspect to it but unlike pro sports or the Olympics, it does not dominate the essence of the tournament. This current World Cup tourney united Americans from Queens, NY, Kearny NJ, Chicago, Il, Seattle, Topeka, Los Angeles, Honolulu and Anchorage. Should we include Berlin and Munich? Where do we draw the line? It is a complicated issue that deserves examination and solutions. Does being German born and raised make those players any less American and/or disqualify them from the U.S. national team? Perhaps a 5 to 10 year residency requirement should be enacted by the U.S. Soccer Federation. Isn’t the whole point of the program to create a strong program in the states?

Beating Belgium

Would Donovan have helped the U.S. squad defeat the Belgium team yesterday? Of course we will never know but one thing I do know is that I would have preferred to watch Landon Donovan yesterday because I would’ve recognized him, been familiar with his style of play and felt like I had been in the trenches with him over the past 12 years. In the video Andres Cantor, Mr. ‘Goooool’, calls the play and describes Donovan as the greatest U.S. Soccer player of all-time.

The Gift of Giving

What motivates people to give: give of themselves, give of their possessions, give of their karmic energy? Do we as humans have an innate sense of responsibility toward our fellow person? Some folks like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., dedicated their life to giving and gave their life while giving. It is a well known fact that Dr. King gave his life to fight not only racial injustice, but economic injustices (please give the video a listen). Personally I volunteer my time and talents to the Rail Yards Market because I believe in it’s idea and subscribe to it’s ideals.


Part of the Mission

In my view, the Rail Yards Market (RYM) provides an invaluable opportunity to create a venue where  education, arts, entertainment and alternative food options are at the finger tips of the whole community. A community that includes those less fortunate who are not exposed to this type of programming in their everyday life.  Exposure to creativity and creative outlets can dramatically change the course of people lives. If my efforts at the RYM touches one of the 6,000 people that venture through on any given Sunday, then the many hours that all the volunteers put into the market are well worth it!

In the Spirit of Giving


The multi-talented Raven & the Sweet Potato Pie Band, will be performing this Sunday and at a fundrasier for the Rail Yards Market at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in July. Tickets for the fundraiser will be available on Sunday (a portion of the proceeds will be donated to  the RYM). The band performs at 2pm on the Main Stage.

Art & EducationGiving with Tiphan Hunter

The RYM Live Arts Zone welcomes lauded local Multimedia Artisan and Writer Tiphan Hunter for the whole Market Day on Sunday June 29th! Hunter will be presenting Charcoal Sketches and Live Painting. You won’t want to miss this University of New Mexico Fine Arts Alumni. Join us in Creative Beauty.

Based upon my multimedia children’s story of the same name, bring the family to watch a fun family-friendly play about a Princess and who otter sidekick in search of two mischievous musicians that have stolen the moon! Afternoon programming at the Children’s Zone includes a special appearance by Princess Marisol herself teaching children how to make colorful polymer bounding balls! Assisted by super educator/artistmusician Stephanie Galloway and your truly. 

Jade Leyva Seed MuralsWe will also be featuring Jade Leyva Seeds Mural at the Traditional Zone. “Jade Leyva was born in Mexico City on June 18, 1976. Growing up in an artistʼs household (her mother is a painter and textile artist) and surrounded by a number of talented family members involved in various arts and cultural pursuits, Jade has been in constant contact with the artistic process her entire life.” We are thrilled to have her as an Educator this weekend at the RYM!

I recently read an article where the author states, “Giving back is where you give, and then nothing happens. No benefits for you, no recognition, nothing tangible gets sent your way. Your biggest and sole reward is the realization that you’ve made a significant change in someone’s life. And if not “significant” then a positive change nevertheless.” I wholeheartedly agree. I hail from a tradition of self-respect. Of mothers and aunts who show no quarter to fools and speak their minds. Of people undaunted by years struggle in the segregated cotton fields of south Texas. Of vast fields and plains, where the original ‘cowboy’ – vaquero rode the land and will again.

Where there is no chivalry and never was, but the struggle to survive in a land of violence and massacre to keep at bey the ancient cultures and ideas of land tenure. Music is the source of life and corridos of many a type, it is the passion that never ends as the musical note lasts longer than the empires reign! To teach, to work in all but few trades to learn the empires language and custom but remain true to the idea of never being accepted or accepting the shackles of blame.

Joseph Garcia was born and raised in South Texas. He earned a Bachelors Degree from Texas A&M University, a Masters Degree from the University of New Mexico. He is currently a PhD Candidate in Latin American Studies at the University of New Mexico, where he teaches Chicana and Chicano Studies. Joseph was also a Peace Corp volunteer working in Paraguay.

Joseph is creating a multimedia anthology of his poetry – Successful Defiance – to be published by Community Publishing. This multimedia anthology will include Joseph’s music, and art in addition to his poetry and thoughts.

Alex Paramo was elected as first alternate to the KUNM Radio Board! He is currently a full voting board member as of August 2023.

Alex is the co-founder of Community Publishing. Community Publishing is dedicated to creating virtual space for community based artists of all media (writers, painters, photographers, musicians, etc…) to collaborate on multimedia book projects with the purpose of promoting their work. Unlike traditional publishers, Community Publishing uses a “ground up” approach which emphasizes an all-encompassing collaborative method. Community Publishing‘s projects also serve the function of promoting literacy in our communities. Alex also writes a regular local music feature for New Mexico Entertainment Magazine. 

smARTalk Returns

Alex’s hit podcast smARTalk has returned in 2024, broadcasting from the KUNM studios in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

New Mexico Entertainment Magazine – Live Music Beat

Alex was hired in the Spring of 2023 to be the Live Music Beat writer. In this capacity, he will cover local musicians, regional and national touring music acts as well as anything else pertaining to live music in New Mexico.

His first article covered Ryan Montano – a New Mexico born trumpet player who has ascended into national recognition.

His second article reviewed the performance of Wild Child at Meow Wolf in Santa Fe.

Biography

Alex and Marisol Paramo – KUNM Radio

Alex Paramo was born and raised in Queens, NYC. His parents are originally from Colombia, South America. At the age of 8 Alex developed an interest in the media, watching national network news and reading the NY Times. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and History with minors in Sociology, Secondary Education, and Psychology from Queens College, City University of New York. After graduating from College, Alex moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico and attended the University of New Mexico. (UNM). At UNM he studied Counseling and History at the graduate level. Additionally Alex worked as a Speech Writer and Web Master for UNM’s Provost and President. Alex currently teaches Middle School English & History at an APS Charter School in the South Valley and lives in Albuquerque with his young daughter Marisol. Alex and Marisol spend their time crafting stories from their imagination while incorporating aspects of the world around them.

I have often come across the question, “what is an artist?” and the answers are numerous and debated heatedly. I’ve come to the conclusion that the definition of an artist is something rather simple. An artist is someone who has not forgotten how to create a world through imagination. Last night I spent the evening with the cast of Princess Marisol & the Moon Thieves, a FUSION Theatre Company Production based on the multimedia children’s book by Community Publishing’s,  Alex Paramo. I have never experienced the behind the scenes action of a stage production and what I found was a room of players creating the very thing that we strive to find again once childhood is gone. No wonder those who fall into theatre are consumed by it. It is as near to the wonder of childhood as we adults can venture.

The Play

The Director, Laurie Thomas, is the leader of the play. And by play, I mean the creative fun that is unfolding among all of the players. It is fantastically the same as watching a group of children organize their make believe world. Laurie’s ideas seem to tumble forth, a shimmering river of imagination. Her playmates joyfully and wondrously and elegantly follow her lead.

The players spindle playwright’s, Jen Silverman’s, script into a magical reality. For the moments that they are on stage, they shed their daily identities, and become Marisol, The Moon, the Otter, the traveling musicians, El Raton, and the Wise Woman.

The Score

Music, directed by Keith Sanchez, ties the play together; the vivacity behind the action on stage, it takes the emotion of each player and shares it with the audience.

So what is an artist? It is those someones who keep close to them, and never let go, that which makes life magnificent.
