Rail Yards Market Set to Begin 3rd Season

One of Albuquerque’s favorite Spring/Summer/Fall free “events” is beginning it’s 3rd Season at the Albuquerque Rail Yards – Historic Blacksmith Shop. Located in the historic Barelas neighborhood, the Rail Yards Market  (RYM) places an emphasis on LOCAL in every aspect from the Rail Yards grounds, to growers, it represents the best New Mexico has to offer.

Bigger and Better

This season the RYM welcomes over 100 vendors every Sunday beginning Sunday May 1st. Utilizing a portion of the parking lot and the rear (south end) of the Blacksmith’s shop, the RYM will be accommodating more vendors both inside and outside. “Expanding into a portion of the parking lot will help us create a more festive environment for all involved” stated Market Manager Alaska Piper. The outdoor area will also host a petting zoo courtesy of Michael Mull STEAM Aaron Richardsonand the folks at One World Rug Care. The RYM will utilize the outdoor space at the back of the building to host entertainment of all kinds. Programming plans include more diverse acts in terms of culture, genre and content. Expect to see Yoga (for all levels), Student and multi-lingual acts.

Opening Day includes some favorites such as Bhava Yoga hosting Morning Yoga,La Rondalla de Albuquerque and theNational Institute of Flamenco. Click here for schedule. Hours will be the same as last season, 10-2pm with the RYM opening EVERY Sunday thru October 30. The Kids Zone will feature hat making using recyclable materials with the STEAM Zone featuring Artist Aaron Richardson.

Outreach

The RYM will also be focusing on Community Outreach using the New Mexico Farmer’s Market Associations Double Up Food Bucks program to reach a broad spectrum of people who will have the opportunity to double their money allocated with the SNAP/EBT Benefit benefit. Every week will feature a different theme emphasizing the diversity of the state.

Local Produce and the Benefits to our Community

We live in a fast-paced society where moments of contemplation do not arrive with much facilitation. We eat but do we know where our food comes from or how it was produced? From produce to production, most of are clueless to the process and many are not privy to the important role our local food growers play to the health of our city, environment and for the benefit of our planet!

Celebrating our local Growers!

For Growers Day we have Osuna Nursery’s in our STEAM Zone,
Osuna Nursery’s Operation’s Manager, Jessyca, will be demonstrating how to plant and grow herb & perennial plants, she will also be available for questions in-between demo’s.

Albuquerque Public Arts ProgramIn our Children’s Zone Rachel Harris-Huffman from the Public Art Department will be offer make-and-take art projects and coloring based on pieces in the Public Art Collection, and will have a display including a number of works from the collection. The City of Albuquerque Public Art Program is dedicated to inspiring the human spirit throughout our community. Built on the foundation of two City Ordinances, the Public Art Program provides the public with arts and cultural information and services, and Works of Art which result from common goals developed by City government and the community – reflecting the diverse spectrum of beliefs, cultural heritage and traditions, and artistic expressions in Albuquerque.

How to Build a Community in Less than 2 Weeks

There are less than 2 weeks until the grand opening (May 4) of the Rail Yards Market and everyone involved is ramping up their efforts, doing their part, to make it the overwhelming success it is going to be.

But Why? What drives our desire to belong to a community?

Belonging

Humanist psychologist Abraham Maslow developed the concept of a “hierarchy of needs” in his 1943 book, Motivation and Personality. This hierarchy suggests that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs. One of those needs is the need to belong which gives us a sense that we belong, we matter, we contribute. 

Are there measurable benefits?

Community

In 1986, social psychologists McMillan & Chavis formed the theory that has become the most widely accepted understanding of how communities work and why. They called this theory, “A Sense of Community.” A community of people thrives because it is based upon care. Community members care about each others well being because they know that each individual is essential for the survival of the whole.

Beyond the personal, communities foster:

  • Greater participation in civic responsibilities thereby enhancing our democracy
  • An increase in shopping local which benefits the local economy
  • Giving a louder voice to group concerns brings important issues the attention they warrant

One person at a time. At the Rail Yards Market committee meetings, we are encouraged to bring people with us. Whoever might be interested in participating, whether they are established artists/musicians or someone that only has time to give, all are welcome: every contribution is appreciated.

My involvement with the Rail Yards Market began early last year when my publishing company, Community Publishing, was called upon to program the Kids Zone at the RYM. Along with co-founder Yvette Sandoval, artist Vanessa Martinez and artist/educator Stephanie Galloway, we were able to provide educational programming for the first months of the 2014 season. 

The RYM is more than just a farmers market, arts/artisan market or a venue for entertainers or educators. The RYM has the potential to serve as a sanctuary where folks from the community can come enjoy and/or participate in a paradigm shift. A shift that includes the belief that we as a community of people are empowered to change our city, our society a just, equitable place that puts the interests of the people ahead of profit. If we bond together in mutual support we can take the power out of the few and give it back to the many for the benefit of all of us.

The Rail Yards Market (RYM) is excited to announce that we are back and better than ever! The 2015 market opens on May 3rd and will run most Sundays from 9AM-1PM through October. We aim to continue and improve upon this community-powered movement to stimulate local economic growth in Albuquerque and expose the community to local artists and educators.

Highlights of the 2014 Season

The Albuquerque community really made our inaugural season a rousing success. Due to your support we:

  • Welcomed over 120,000 folks through our doors in 2014
  • Generated over $500,000 in local business revenues
  • Amassed over 16,236 volunteer hours
  • Provided a platform for 730+ vendors & artists
  • Amassed over 11,000 fans on Facebook

Additionally we featured dancers, poets, fortune tellers, bike valet, a FUSION Theatre production of Princess Marisol & the Moon Thieves, high-wire acts, and information from various community health care organizations.

Diversity

National Institute of Flamenco

Diversity is of paramount importance to us at the RYM. Therefore this season we will be welcoming more vendors on the day of the market and more vendors in total. Artisans and Artist will be rotating to allow for us to give more opportunities to our talented community members. In addition, our Educational Zones will include more community organizations and will be focused toward a specific theme.

While we will be bringing back some favorites from last season like morning exercises, poets, and flamenco dancers, we will also be diversifying our entertainment options. Musically we plan on mixing up the lineups we have to include traditional New Mexican music, Latino and African American music artists, Native American acts as well as music offerings from all around our local community and our international community.

With an eye toward expanding our culinary offerings, we are reaching out to our Asian American restaurateurs. Continuing with the theme of reaching deeper into our community, the RYM is hiring a Community Outreach Coordinator who will be tasked with forging connections and creating alliances with neighborhood groups around the vicinity of the RYM and beyond. Their duties will also include fundraising and the disbursement of our RYM tokens throughout Albuquerque.

3 Things to Look Forward to in 2015

1. More Vendors: we have increased our vendor numbers to roughly 100 every Sunday.
2. WIC & SNAP: we will start accepting WIC (Women, Infants, and Children Supplemental Food Program) as well as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) funding. Participants can use their SNAP “double up food bucks” at the RYM to buy double the produce for half the price.
3. Monthly Newsletter: we will publishing a monthly newsletter that will contain information and discounts. Be on the lookout for signups shortly!

Happy Landings at the Rail Yards Market

Each year the Albuquerque International T-ShirtBalloon Fiesta attracts hundreds of thousands of folks from all over the world! Balloon enthusiasts fill the streets of this beautiful city, while hot-air balloons add more colors to the already magnificent color palette of it’s mesmerizing sky! Year after year the Balloon Fiesta seems more breathtaking than the previous and a visit to Albuquerque is not complete without a visit to the International Balloon Fiesta Museum/Park. Every year Albuquerque seems more vibrant, with an increasing number of attractions and must-experience venues!

The Heart of the City

Dan GardunoLocated in beautiful Barelas, the Rail Yards Market is part of that ever-expanding list of must-experience venues but it is not easily classifiable. It is much more than a market but rather a meeting place, where a vortex of sights, sounds, aromas and tastes congregate, every Sunday from 9am to 3pm! Artists of all mediums converge with educators and a dedicated community of volunteers to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience! It is truly a world-class event where patrons can shop from local growers, listen to amazing music, partake in mindful stretching, learn from dedicated educators, and be exposed to cutting-edge art while being exposed to ideas regarding sustainability and a reintroduction to traditional ways of living.

Education through the Arts

Pop Up ArtAt the Pop Up Arts Zone we have an Interactive installation by  Rosalie M. López “¿No estoy yo aquí, Am I not here? Ms. López is a Chicana conceptual artist whose work revolves around reforming religious and cultural iconography to express ambivalences in contemporary culture. Her work often discusses the duality of dysfunctional social cycles juxtaposed with positive expressions of cultural identity and communal strength. She primarily uses printmaking, installation, and the altar/ofrenda to relay experiences of survival, loss, and hope. She is currently working with students of Working Classroom to create contemporary installation altars dedicated to this lost to preventable deaths. The work will be displayed in an exhibition November 2 at 100 Gold Ave. SW (corner of 1st and Gold).

Africana StudiesThe Children’s Zone features Africana Leadership Opportunity Team (ALOT), LLC which provides innovative educational solutions for the community, in higher education, and for New Mexico’s children through Africana Cultural Arts. Children will have the opportunity to create art while exploring Africana history and culture, and using interesting new tools. ALOT will also provide art made by Third World Outliers, an artist collective within ALOT, to support the no cost educational programming. ALOT creates well-developed and content rich project-based curriculum that meets the New Mexico State Standards, as well as exceeds the benchmarks set by the New Common Core Initiative and recommendations by the Arts Education Partnership and the National Collation for Core Arts Standards. Through innovative programming, ALOT has served over 200 youth and over 150 UNM Students just this year through the ALOT Summer School for Educational Transformation (ASSET), the ALOT Cultural Arts Program at APS, and art seminars across the city. ALOT is comprised of certified teachers, UNM Faculty, students, and community members who believe that art, learning, and teaching are the most radical of acts.

Labor DayThe Sustainability Zone will be promoting the concept of sustainability through the SUVA school hunger program. Donnine Canamar will be talking about student hunger and why as a system, we need to correct this imbalance. She will be handing out literature about the program as well as info about where people can donate.

Celebrating the Harvest at the Rail Yards Market

The harvest, a time to collect the gifts given to us by nature and brought about by the labor of our dedicated growers. Harvest Festivals are celebrated world-wide such as Thanksgiving in the US and Canada. Many celebrations are an amalgamation of pagan rituals and the dominant religion. The image to the left depicts the Harvest Celebration in Poland.

Local Growers

Locally, we have many dedicated growers that avoid genetically modified organisms (GMOs). GMO‘s have been shown to be unhealthy and are banned in over 60 countries including the European Union and Japan. It makes obvious sense to shop from our friends and neighbors because it benefits our community economically, nutritionally and socially. At the RYM we feature many local growers that use the Rio Grande to bring  us sustenance. Come down and support them and celebrate the most life-giving contribution to our society.

Programming

Harvest DayTraditional Zone presents Cycles of Life Educator Jake Foreman and Crew to help bring in the Fall Season!! Join us there and share in the positivity! The Live Arts Zone welcomes Las Aranas Spinning and Weaving Guild for Autumn Harvest Day! Enjoy a vibrant demonstration with hands on drop spinning where visitors can learn the ancient art of making their own yarn! Expert spinners demonstrating on personal spinning wheels. Also, we will have a public 4 harness loom where visitors cans throw the shuttle a few times to add to the weaving!

Southwest University of Visual Arts

Labor DayChildren’s Zone hosts a day with the Southwest University of Visual Arts (SUVA) for fun creative surprises! The Pop UP gallery will host a photography exhibition by students whom attend SUVA. This exhibit will host the diverse and provocative work of Daniel Gallegos, Josh Cruz and Omar Galaviz.

Main and Community Stages

On our stages we constantly feature talented local folks from all of the performance arts including poetry, mindful movement, dance, acrobatics, singing and playing! This week is no different. For complete schedule click here:

Appreciating our Friends and Neighbors

The idea of spending most of our days in a farm is far removed from the minds of most folks. In fact roughly 1% of our population of 313,000,000 are farmers. Most of us head on over to the grocery store and presto-magic the food is right there on the shelves at our convenience. The work of bringing the bounty from farm to those grocery stores involves many dedicated individuals and at the Rail Yards Market (RYM) we celebrate them. See You Sunday!

As we approach the half-way point at the Rail Yards Market (RYM), I would personally like to thank the residents of Albuquerque for embracing the Rail Yards Market and making it a hub for community interaction, a piston for local commerce, a showcase for local entertainers, educators and artists, and the place be on Sunday’s from 9am to 3pm in the beautiful Barelas neighborhood. I am certain that all of my fellow volunteers feel the same way I do: eternally grateful to you all, our neighbors and new-found friends!

Gearing up for the 2nd Half

Warehouse 508We are using the experiences we had in the 1st half of the season at the RYM and making some tweaks to better serve, entertain and educate our community. Some exciting modifications in-store for you for the 2nd half of the season at the RYM include closer collaboration for educational programming with our community sponsors, partners and stakeholders such as SUVA, Warehouse 508, OffCenter Community Arts Project. Working Classroom, and Harwood Art Center to mention just a few.

Additionally, we will be adding and rotating food options, vendors, artisans and entertainers to lend additional exposure to our fabulous and diverse community of local entrepreneurs and creative folks! The wide variety of food-truck options, like Irrational Pies, will continue. Farm to table options are schedule to increase as well. Your input and recommendations are certainly welcome. This Sunday at the RYM

SUVASustainability by design with the South West University of Visual Arts (SUVA) on Sunday! RYM presents junior interior design student Alyssa Metoyer in our Educational Sustainability Zone. Alyssa specializes in environmentally sound designs that are sure to spark a desire to create better ways of living. Innovation meets inspiration and opens doors to a creative future combined with a friendly footprint. Join us and let your mind step forward in a life positive way!

The Children’s Zone will feature artist-educators, Rachel Harris-Huffman, Charlie Gravina, Trinity Treat from OffCenter Community Arts Project. Children will make bookmarks, paper pendants on ball chains, and some small 2D art pieces. There will be lots of paper, magazines, markers, stamps with pads, regular and pattern-cutting scissors, and soooo many glue sticks for everyone to get real messy!

Rail Yards MarketPainter and muralist Nani Chacon will be displaying her incredible work in our Pop Up Fine Art Gallery, including several works that won’t be shown again after this weekend. Nani is also a programmer/partner at the RYM and we are proud to have her contributing her many talents to our community-powered Sundays!

Entertainers include Creative Movements for all ages at the Community Stage. On the Main Stage we will showcase New Mexico’s finest Poets, the RYM’s Rob Hobert and Dead Gunz, all the way from Phoenix, AZ – The Missing Parts. Additionally the amazing Audio Buddha, and one of Albuquerque’s top bands will be joining us: Cali Shaw Band! Please click here for a complete schedule

 Looking Back while Moving Forward

Thank YouFrom it’s inception, the RYM has been an all volunteer, community-powered event. Many folks, from walks of life came together with a similar mission, “The Rail Yards Market is focused on building a resilient, sustainable local economy that we all love to work and play in. Through food, art, and music, we hope to bring our community together in an atmosphere of fun, learning, and creativity” (from the RYM website). Due to all of the positive feedback we have received, we feel like we are succeeding! This success is due in large part to all of our partners, sponsors, volunteers, founding members and especially to you: our Albuquerque/New Mexico community!
